The hottest thing around continues to be Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The question "What are the page coding techniques I need to use to give my site a chance to be recognized by search engines?" is central to what SEO is about.

If you're not familiar with this subject then start with the Prime Directive of using XHTML/HTML correctly so that search engine spiders, such as the googlebot can work effectively towards indexing and cataloging your site. (We'll leave the matter of how search engines gather information about web sites and what they do with it for another issue of Joy Gems).

One of the best authorities in the SEO world is Jill Whalen, head of High Rankings.com. She understands the Prime Directive and a whole lot more.

  • Her highrankins.com site is loaded with resources and a place I turn to frequently for excellent advice. She's got an archive of the many articles she's written. Two of my favorites are "Common Sense Search Engine Optimization" and another, "No Quick Fixes Where Search Engine Optimization is Concerned."

All of Jill's articles point to why it's best to adopt web standards in your markup (code) and how that will help getting searchers to find you.

  • The site has a very active Forum where people post questions and receive answers to anything SEO related. Jill has even responded to a post of mine.

  • I, (and 20,000 others, are subscribers to her High Rankings Search Engine Optimization Newsletter. It's issued once a week. OK, I'm a little behind on reading back issues but I will because she's a must read.
