Last year I managed to write 22 Joy Gems. While I wish I could have selected my favorites from all of those, I can't. Why?

In August, I stopped posting my JGs to my current web site. The issues after that, and the ones that follow this year, will be posted to the new Joy Of Code web site (now in month 10 - and counting - of its redevelopment).

So, choosing from the issues that are currently on the web, here are a few of my favorite Joy Gems. As always, I write for those who are new to web design and for people moving beyond the newbie stage.

Just The Opposite Is True

It is becoming increasingly apparent, not just to me but to millions the world over, that the way to achieve elegant and engaging web design is through the use of web design standards. They're not your obstacle, they're your way to reaching most of your design goals and much more.

That's why "Just The Opposite Is True."

It's The Navigation, Stupid

In this article I harangued about how the navigation interface is the most important part of a web site. Upon further review let's just say it is one of the most important pieces. Content counts for something, too, don't you think?

I know I've just made a contradictory point. However, do not underestimate the importance of your site's navigation. Do not skimp on the amount of time you spend working through all the considerations that go into making excellent site navigation elements.

What Means Work?

This article came forth following an email exchange with a JG Reader. She was beginning to do freelance design work and was wondering how she should determine what to charge clients.

How do you go about defining work in The Information Age? What are some of the things people need to consider when deciding how much to charge for what they do?
