1. What is the fee for Introduction To XHTML And CSS? When can I start?

   The fee for Introduction To XHTML And CSS is $350. You can pay at the time you enroll via Visa or MasterCard. You can also pay using PayPal (the Internet's most widely used payment system accepting all major credit and debit cards) or via check to TryNet, Inc., the company that owns and operates Joy Of Code.

   After enrolling, you'll be instructed on how to log in.

2. What is your 10 day no risk money back guarantee?

   You have ten days from the start of the Workshop to advise me of cancellation and promptly receive a 100% ($350.) refund of the Workshop fee. That's no risk to you because, by that time, you will have seen at least the first 2 of 12 Chapters and Labs.

   (No refund is available for those enrolling under some Discount Programs.)

   Alternatively, you have the option to postpone the completion of the Workshop anytime during the first four weeks. You'll be able to resume the Workshop up to six months from the postponement.

3. What will I have learned when this Workshop is over?

   If you are diligent, do the labs, and create your Project, by the end of the Workshop you will be on your way to creating web pages that suit a wide variety of needs. This is true whether you are a designer, graphic artist, programmer, writer, business owner, systems admin, career changer or anyone else needing to understand how web sites are made.

   You will not necessarily become a Jedi Webmaster because those skills take time to develop. What you leave with is related to what you bring in. Follow my instructions (do as I say and do) so that post-Workshop, you will have the skills to grow beyond the Workshop.

   You will have learned the material in a structured way so that you can continue to advance your skills long after the Workshop is over.

   XHTML and CSS are foundational. This is a lot like learning to build a great stage upon which anything you wish to do on that stage will hold up.

4. What skills and abilities should I have before I start?

   All you really need to know is how to use basic text editors like Notepad, TextEdit or Simple Text. These applications are on every Windows or Apple computer.

   You also have to know how to use File and Edit menu commands like Save, Cut, Copy, and Paste.

   Can you save and open files? Create new folders? You're ready.

   To excel in this Workshop, you should be able to study on your own, even though Your Friendly Instructor will be there to guide you. Being well organized and self-motivated are big plusses too.

5. Does it matter which operating system I use? Are there any special applications I need?

   No and no. This Workshop is designed to work on every conceivable operating system. The only applications you'll need are a web browser, email program, and text editor.

   A modern browser is highly recommended. Internet Explorer 6+ or Firefox will do the trick. Safari for the Mac works too.

   If you know Photoshop (or similar graphics producing application), that's great, but the Workshop provides plenty of graphics for you to use. Making imagery is not an essential requirement of the Workshop and, in fact, is not its focus.

   If you are a graphic artist you are encouraged to use your creative sizzle.

   Of course you'll need an internet connection, but speed is not of critical importance.

7. What do people say who have taken this Workshop?

8. I have some knowledge of HTML, so why should I take this Workshop? Do I really need to learn XHTML and CSS?

   Yes. Chances are your knowledge of HTML is incomplete at best, and was learned haphazardly like many people. With XHTML and CSS you will learn...

   • how to create well formed documents that validate to industry standards, and why that is important;
   • that converting your knowledge of HTML to XHTML is not very hard;
   • how to use CSS, the styling system that works along side XHTML to provide flexible and efficient style and layout possibilities.

9. What don't you cover in this Workshop?

   Popular scripting languages, like Javascript and Perl, are mentioned but not taught since those are large subjects in themselves. If you're a programmer and already know those or other languages, so much the better.

   I also don't teach design and production of rich media (much as I love them ) such as Flash, Real Media, or Windows Media.

   As mentioned above, graphics applications like Photoshop or Fireworks are not covered. If you know how to use those applications, you'll be encouraged to do so. If not, don't worry.

10. Can't I learn everything you teach for free? Why do you charge $350 to take the Workshop?

    • You will not get the PERSONAL attention I give you any other way - no one in their right mind will give you for free what I provide to you for a reasonable fee.
    • The material you will learn and the techniques I use are proven. People have successfully learned how to create web pages from my method.
    • The material is up to date, and that takes time, and you know what time equals.

11. I have a disability. Will your Workshop work for me?

    I have designed this Workshop so that people with disabilities can access it. I do so using industry guidelines...and common sense.

    Can I state this without equivocation? No. However, if there is a situation where someone can't gain access to the Workshop content, I want to know so that I can provide a resolution.

    There will be external content which is outside the domain of this Workshop (content of others that I link to). In those cases, I can't make statements as to whether such content is accessible.

12. Who is this Friendly Web Design Instructor and what is his experience?

    That's me, Bud Kraus, President of TryNet, Inc.

    I'm a teacher and consultant who is a proponent and practitioner of web page design standards. I also provide Code Aid, a rescue service for ailing web pages and provide other services for re-designing web sites.

    I have been developing and teaching this Workshop since 1997. I still get a kick out of seeing that light go on that tells me when someone gets it.

    I want this Workshop to work for you and be an enJOYable learning experience as it has been for many others.

13. How is the Workshop organized? Tell me how it works and what I will be doing.

    Say you start Introduction To XHTML And CSS today, Tuesday and login to the Workshop for the first time. That (in this case, Tuesday ) becomes your weekiversary and every Tuesday for the next twelve weeks another Lesson (Chapter and Lab) is ready for you.

    With each Lesson, you will read a Chapter, use the Code Tester to sample code, and then do a Lab which exercises the points in that Lesson's material. After you complete the lab, you will post your work to your Work Space for me, your Friendly Web Design Instructor, to review. I'll send my comments about your work via email within 48 hours after you've posted your work.

    Once you get my review if there are corrections to be made you'll need to make them before going on to the next Lesson since each week's material builds upon what you have already learned.

14. As the weeks go on, Workshop material is never taken down - just added on - so you can go back and refresh, or learn anew, previously covered material.

    You never have to be at your computer at any given time. Take the Workshop at work, home or at the beach!! (Well, that might not be such a hot idea.)

    The Workshop interface has no Frames (except in the Lab during the week I teach Frames) and no annoying pop-up windows.

    As we get to the finish line, you'll be working on your Project, something that should have value to you beyond the duration of the Workshop.

15. What kind of support can I expect and how often can I get it?

    I will do everything I can to review the Lab work you upload to your Work Space within 48 hours and send you my review by email.

    Most of the time it's a lot sooner.

16. What about phone support? Can I call you?

    Phone calls are discouraged as the fee does not support my time to converse with you, much as I might like. (If there are serious problems, then we can arrange to talk by phone.)

    As a past, present or future student you may join periodic, scheduled conference Call-Ins with other students to ask questions. Listen to an example of a Call-In (mp3).

17. Once I'm taking the Workshop, can I change my schedule so I can do a Lesson in less than one week?

    Yes. Some people prefer to accelerate the pace of the Workshop by reading Chapters and doing Labs in less than one week intervals. Once you start the Workshop, you can change your schedule to one that might be more suitable for you.

18. How much time should this take each week?

    Tough to say because it depends on so many factors. It could range from an hour or two to much longer. While the material advances every week, if you "work the Workshop," you'll start seeing results right away.

    Remember you can always go back and review something, because material is never removed as each week passes.

19. What if I need more than 12 weeks to finish the Workshop?

    Family emergencies, business trips, vacations, holidays, and the occasional need to mysteriously disappear for a while, cause some people to need more than 12 weeks to do the Workshop.

    Here's the Overtime Rule if more than 12 weeks are needed:

    If you can't finish the Workshop in the 12 weeks, I give you two extra weeks to wrap up. I still highly recommend that you complete the Workshop within 12 weeks if at all possible. That's the best approach.

    If 14 weeks is still not enough time, you may continue for another two weeks for an additional charge of $50. That will give you four months to get all the "JOY" you could possibly need or want.

    If more than 16 weeks are needed, then we hire lawyers and negotiate!!

20. Can I print Workshop material?

    You have permission to print the material if you find that a hard copy is easier or more convenient for you to review. But my Workshop is licensed to you and you alone, and no other copies, in any format or media, are allowed.

    More about that in the Terms Of Service to which you must agreed and abide by in order to take this Workshop.

21. What's my Project about?

    A few weeks into the Workshop you will be asked to start forming ideas about creating a site that will have value to you even when the Workshop is over. Big or small, the Project size is not a significant factor.

    What I'll be looking for is an execution of the ideas presented in the Workshop. I won't be asking you to finalize the project because most good web projects are works in progress.

    After the Workshop is over, and as your skills develop, your Project can be something you can continue to build. In fact, the creation of this Workshop is much like that. You should see what it was in 1997 and what it has become today and how it was put together. Light years apart!!
